Strange sounds in the night

photo: kids.nationalgeographic.com

It got up to 82 today and so when I got home, I opened up all the windows and turned on the ceiling fans and it felt warm and almost tropical in the house (nice til I want to sleep...) and the peepers were serenading...

And then, this sound, like a bird? A fox in heat? Or something trapped and succumbing, across the lake, in the dark...Unsettling if you were a creature outside, and being safe inside...

I just wondered "What the hell is it?"

  7. It sounds like a heron--quite a few are active at night, especially during migration and the breeding season. I'm not sure what part of the country you live in so I don't know what herons you would have but if I had to guess, I would say this is a yellow-crowned night-heron.

  9. The sounds in nature can indeed be creepy, alarming, amusing, fascinating, vurry scurry, but they never fail to amaze me with their variety.
