Odds and Ends

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted much besides photos...I'm in a slump, both in getting the house back in order and making plans for things to accomplish.

I visit friends blogs and see something that attracts me and I think I will do something along those lines...but then I don't write it down and I can't remember where I saw the idea (and I always like to give credit)...but this week I did make some notes and thought I'd start there.

This blogger posted a photo of her kitchen window and it got me to thinking of all the places I've lived and what was in my kitchen window. I have lived in places without a window over the kitchen sink and somehow it's relaxing and a little pleasure to gaze out a window while you are washing dishes, isn't it? And I have always had a collection of something in my kitchen windowsills, never in any other room does it look right to me...

In Oregon, I lived in a small '50's bungalow with a kitchen window looking out over the porch and front yard. I could see the flowers in the brick planter and the flowering trees. I had some of my favorite cat Christmas ornaments hanging from the window valance and some vintage salt and pepper shakers (my grandmothers), and egg coddlers (that my mom brought me from England) on the sill.

Here in Virginia, the kitchen window overlooks the backyard and the slope down to the lake. There is always something to see--wildlife, changing seasonal colors and the lake itself, which changes with the weather. In this strip of 5 townhomes, three kitchens face the lake and two face the parking spots...I am glad I have the view I have from the kitchen, even though the master bedroom overlooks the street--I'm mostly asleep up there!

In this kitchen windowsill, I have two little cat statues I got on one of our trips to England, as well as some herbs and flowers, which are in pretty Italian pots. The curtains are actually pretty napkins I found at Williams Sonoma and the valance is also napkins that my mom brought back for me from France (just noticed you can't see them in the photo, but they are lovely, yellow and greens, with an olive and leaf pattern.

So, for me...kitchen window sills are filled with sentimental memories and little special things that make us smile...what about your kitchen window?
