Odds and Ends

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted much besides photos...I'm in a slump, both in getting the house back in order and making plans for things to accomplish.

I visit friends blogs and see something that attracts me and I think I will do something along those lines...but then I don't write it down and I can't remember where I saw the idea (and I always like to give credit)...but this week I did make some notes and thought I'd start there.

This blogger posted a photo of her kitchen window and it got me to thinking of all the places I've lived and what was in my kitchen window. I have lived in places without a window over the kitchen sink and somehow it's relaxing and a little pleasure to gaze out a window while you are washing dishes, isn't it? And I have always had a collection of something in my kitchen windowsills, never in any other room does it look right to me...

In Oregon, I lived in a small '50's bungalow with a kitchen window looking out over the porch and front yard. I could see the flowers in the brick planter and the flowering trees. I had some of my favorite cat Christmas ornaments hanging from the window valance and some vintage salt and pepper shakers (my grandmothers), and egg coddlers (that my mom brought me from England) on the sill.

Here in Virginia, the kitchen window overlooks the backyard and the slope down to the lake. There is always something to see--wildlife, changing seasonal colors and the lake itself, which changes with the weather. In this strip of 5 townhomes, three kitchens face the lake and two face the parking spots...I am glad I have the view I have from the kitchen, even though the master bedroom overlooks the street--I'm mostly asleep up there!

In this kitchen windowsill, I have two little cat statues I got on one of our trips to England, as well as some herbs and flowers, which are in pretty Italian pots. The curtains are actually pretty napkins I found at Williams Sonoma and the valance is also napkins that my mom brought back for me from France (just noticed you can't see them in the photo, but they are lovely, yellow and greens, with an olive and leaf pattern.

So, for me...kitchen window sills are filled with sentimental memories and little special things that make us smile...what about your kitchen window?

  2. My kitchen sink over looks the family room and all my mess and art there. It's my computer that looks out to the back yard and all my plants, birds, trees, etc.
I haven't lived in too many different houses...Growing up mom's kitchen window looked over to neighbors house/side; 18 yr old me in Berkeley kitchen apartment had no kitchen window I can recall; Israel kitchenette no window; Vallejo, CA kitchen window looked to dining area and window to patio where our kids played; Early Vacaville rental overlooked front yard; rental house in FF where we lived 15 years over looked the side street, neighbors homes; country Fairfield rental Victorian had the best view overlooked fields of cherry & orange trees beautiful in spring; and our present house like I said sink over looks family room...thanks for leading me down this long memory lane. ;-)

  3. I dont have much on my kitchen windowsill other than sponges and soap because my cats use that window for access to the house and most times ending up knocking everything off.

  4. lovely photo. I wish I had a window over my sink, but I don't, I do have many paintings on the wall above it, so at least I have something nice to look at.

  7. HI there --

I loved this post, great idea, and hearing about the different places you lived. I don't know where in VA you live but we almost moved there (next week would have been the time too!). May get there in a year though, near C'ville... are you near there?

  9. My kitchen window overlooks my garden and the fields beyond, with sheep grazing. Funnily enough - it was only today that I told my husband that it was my favourite view.
